Get Your Film Project Started

Film Line is an online learning, filmmaking and project management tool for schools in Scotland. It takes you through every stage of making a short film. From the technical skills of camera, sound, and editing, to all development and production processes, Film Line is the tool you need to make a short film.

Introducing: Film Line

Getting Started with Film Line

1. Pick Your Film Type

Make a short film, available at 3 curriculum levels, with curriculum linked roles and tasks ready to go. Each film type contains helpful videos, tools, and templates. At Screen Education Edinburgh we have created Film Line using decades of knowledge and experience in developing learners in filmmaking.

2. Create Your Team

Film Line can be used alone or by a team. There is a teacher task role in every film type to allow teachers to manage the project as much or as little as required. We recommend that P5-7 is teacher led, S1-6 is for secondary pupils new to film, and Senior Phase is for S4-6 Film, Screen, and Media pupils, who are likely to be working towards a qualification.

3. View Your Film Line

See your project’s roles and progress in one place. Each film role is clearly defined, so you can learn about each role whilst identifying your tasks. You can choose to work as a team, each taking on individual or multiple roles, or you can work individually, encompassing all roles, from camera and sound, to writing, directing, producing, and editing.

4. Track Your Tasks

Each project guides you through your responsibilities at key stages of development, pre-production, production, and post-production, allowing you to tick each task when completed to easily keep track of your progress. You can also view tasks for the whole team. Task transparency across the project is great for solo filmmakers or teams of any size.

Why Film Line?
Collaborate With Your Team

Teachers can use Film Line as a CLPL tool, learning about roles, technical skills, and production stages before rolling this out in the classroom. Smaller groups of pupils can take on different roles, working as a crew to make their short film. Lastly, pupils working solo can take on all roles, using Film Line as a filmmaking and learning tool that can track and evidence progress, if working towards an assessment, for example.

Learn While You Create

All resources have been developed by our team with years of experience developing learners in and out of school. We’ve worked closely with teachers to shape our educational resources, created with experiential learning in mind. Filmmaking is a technical skill and creative artform, so we’ve used a mix of learning approaches, from hands on practical filmmaking, to developing a narrative, and managing the project to completion.

Works Everywhere You Do

Film Line works on your laptop, tablet, or mobile device, allowing you to manage your filmmaking project on the move. It’s designed to be accessed wherever you are working, so that you can keep track of your progress, even while you’re on set.
